Award Winning Redesign

Creating a new Sunday edition for The Japan Times newspaper.

Reason

In 2013, when The Japan Times newspaper partnered to distribute the print edition of The New York Times in Japan, the opportunity arose to rebrand the then Weekly JT newspaper into the Sunday edition of The Japan Times. It was decided the new Sunday paper would be a tabloid, and would be called The Japan Times On Sunday (aka OnSunday).

Result

Starting with a blank template, I single-handedly designed all sections of the new 28-page tabloid newspaper for The Japan Times. In a departure from newspaper’s previous design style, the cover and the feature pages of OnSunday were designed to have the freedom to explore more magazine-like layouts when appropriate. The new edition launched on October 20, 2013, and subsequently won an Award of Excellence from the Society of News Design for Best Redesign in the 2013 SND 35 Awards.

Cover Award

In January 2017, when Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States, we created a full page cover for OnSunday using a photo shot from behind the new President as he walked to the podium. It was later awarded an Award of Excellence from the Society of News Design for News Page Design in the SND 39 Awards, 2017.
